A special issue on Translational Hermeneutics

Call for Papers (abstract submission deadline 31 August)

Dear Colleagues,

Crossroads. A Journal of English Studies is inviting submissions for a themed issue dedicated to Translational Hermeneutics. The issue is scheduled to be published in the first quarter of 2018.

Translational Hermeneutics, whose theoretical foundations were established by F. Schleiermacher, M. Heidegger and H.-G. Gadamer, is often referred to as a new subdiscipline of Translation Studies. By presenting alternative ways of defining the act of translation, it concentrates on the central figure of the mediating process of translating, namely, the translator.

We invite papers on all aspects of translational hermeneutics, including, but not limited to:

  • translation and the role of the translator as seen by Friedrich Schleiermacher, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Paul Ricoeur;
  • phenomenological issues in translation;
  • translational competence in the light of the main tenets of translational hermeneutics;
  • hermeneutic philosophy of language;
  • understanding and interpretation in translation;
  • translation of culture;
  • historical consciousness and translation;
  • meaning and translation;
  • translational hermeneutics and translation teaching;
  • the relationship between translation and philosophy.

The issue will be edited by Radegundis Stolze and Beata Piecychna.

Guest editor of the issue: Dr. phil. Radegundis Stolze (the University of Technology, Darmstadt), a sworn translator (English, French, Italian), the main representative of Translational Hermeneutics as well as a long-term board member of EST (European Society for Translation Studies). She has published widely on legal translation as well as on the relationship between translation studies and hermeneutics.
